Caitlin Clark was confirmed as a WNBA All-Star on Sunday, something that was long expected in her 2nd season. However, this year’s All-Star selection has a special designation attached to it.
When the fan voting ended on Sunday, the Indiana Fever star was the top vote-getter in the entire country at 1,293,526. Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier was the 2nd-place vote-getter at 1,176,020.
As a result, those two stars will be the captains with Team Clark facing Team Collier in the All-Star Game. Clark and Collier will now take part in a team draft to round out their roster of starters and reserves for the event.
Ultimately, it’s a deserving honor for the 2 players that are atop the latest WNBA MVP odds produced by BetMGM. Collier is the frontrunner at -275, and Clark, even with her injury struggles this season, is 2nd at +275. No other player currently has better than +1400 odds to win the honor.
Clark has missed the last 2 games with a groin injury after previously missing 5 games early in the season with a quad injury. The good news is that Clark could return for a massive head-to-head matchup with Collier and the Lynx on Tuesday in what will be the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship.
“It’s cool that fans get to be a part of it and have a little impact on the game,” Clark said of the captaincy via ESPN. “It’s going to be special to do it here in this city. … Trying to make it the best All-Star that the WNBA has ever had. It’s certainly a cool honor.”
Clark does not currently qualify for the season leaderboards due to her missed time, but her 8.9 assists per game would rank 2nd in the WNBA. Her 18.2 points per game would also qualify for 12th overall, and her 2.6 made 3-pointers per game ranks 3rd in the league.
