Pat Fitzgerald has done a tremendous job this year and now the Northwestern head coach could be in line for an NFL job.

According to uStadium, the New York Jets are seriously looking at Fiztgerald, now in his fifteenth year as Northwestern head coach.

Northwestern, No. 11 in the AP Top 25 Poll, checked in at No. 8 in the recent College Football Playoff ranking that was released on Tuesday. It is the highest ranking for the program under Fitzgerald.

He has done a tremendous job of taking a team known as a Big Ten doormat and turning them into a respectable program. Northwestern is set to make its tenth bowl game under Fitzgerald this year.

Now, it should be noted that uStadium is not a news outlet known for consistently breaking news. Nor should it be confused with the media outlet Stadium, which does break a lot of news and has a track record of scoops. No other outlet has corraborated the rumor that the Jets have interest in the Northwestern head coach.

Here is what uStadium is reporting about Fitzgerald generating NFL interest:

A source told us they have been doing their due diligence on Northwestern’s HC Pat Fitzgerald and not to be surprised if he isn’t their #1 target in January.

The Carolina Panthers reached out to Fitzgerald about their vacancy before hiring Baylor’s Matt Rhule last year. Fitzgerald opted not to formally interview for the position.

Fitzgerald has been highly regarded in NFL circles for years and teams have routinely expressed interest in hiring him. In 2019 the Green Bay Packers also sought out Fitzgerald for an interview, in which he declined.

Now the Jets are currently 0-9 and hold the worst record in the NFL. Head coach Adam Gase, who took the Jets to a surprising 7-9 record in his first season with the organization in 2019, is reportedly on the hot seat and could be fired at the end of the season.
