Northwestern has announced its plans for a phased return to campus for student-athletes. The school’s athletics department released a statement on Thursday.

Student-athletes will begin a phased return back to the Northwestern University campus with voluntary workouts beginning June 22. The NCAA’s moratorium on organized team activities was lifted on June 1. Several other B1G programs have already taken advantage of the ability to get back on campuses.

“All student-athletes will be screened before entering facilities with a wellness check and temperature scan with a no-touch thermometer,” the statement said. “In the clinic and all workout settings, both social distancing personal protective equipment guidelines will be rigidly enforced.”

The phased return will begin with student-athletes participating in football and men’s and women’s basketball. Those three sports will be allowed to resume voluntary workouts beginning June 22. Other sports will follow at a later date.

Northwestern’s first football game of the 2020 season is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5 when it travels to Michigan State.
