One of Northwestern’s best cover corners was forced out of the B1G Championship Game in the second quarter.

The player dealing with an apparent injury is Greg Newsome II. On the season, Newsome has 12 tackles, an interception, and seven passes defended.

Those numbers do not jump off the page, but they obviously do not tell the entire story. He has been on an impressive run as a no-fly zone corner with most quarterbacks not even trying to throw Newsome’s way. When they do, it’s almost always a gamble.

According to the FOX broadcast, Newsome is dealing with what is believed to be a groin injury. He was also seen on the broadcast heading to the locker room with just about five minutes left in the first half.

Newsome’s status for the second half is likely in doubt as it appears he will not be back on the field before halftime. Hopefully he returns because it will put a lot of pressure on Northwestern’s pass defense without his presence on the field.
