Northwestern is adding a little Southwest flavor to is 2020 recruiting class.

On Thursday, the Wildcats received a commitment from three-star safety Gunner Maldonado to the recent class. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound safety is a native of Chandler, Arizona and made his announcement via Twitter.

“First off I’d like to give a HUGE thank you to my family, friends, and coaches who have supported me through this process. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without those people,” Maldonado wrote. “Also, thank you to all the coaches who have recruited me and showed me love. With that being said, I am excited and extremely blessed to announce I am committing to Northwestern University!”

Maldonado is ranked as one of the top 20 players out of Arizona and is listed as the No. 37 safety in the 2020 class. He chose Northwestern over offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Indiana and Iowa State, among others.

With Maldonado’s commitment, Northwestern has jumped up to No. 3 in the B1G’s recruiting rankings for 2020. Nationally, the Wildcats rank 20th.

Northwestern now has 12 hard commitments in the cycle.
