The 2019 opening weekend for the Big Ten went well.

As a conference, the B1G finished 12-2.

One of the two losses, however, came from Northwestern losing at Stanford. The game was a tight one throughout and the Wildcats ended up losing 17-7. What’s next for Northwestern?

Well, Week 2 is a bye week. The team has some extra time off.

During Thursday’s press conference, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald talked about the Week 2 bye:

“When we scheduled this year’s schedule however many years ago, we had an option of having a game this week or a bye,” Fitzgerald said. “(Athletic director Jim Phillips) and I chose to have a bye for this specific reason…It was kind of by design.”

Fitzgerald also talked about missed tackles from Week 1. Specifically, Fitzgerald pointed to junior safety Travis Whillock, who finished with 13 tackles, but also missed 28 by the team’s count:

“He would have been All-American in one game if he made all those tackles,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s a guy we trust…He just missed some tackles, it happens.”

Northwestern hosts UNLV in Week 3 on Sept. 14.
