Pat Fitzgerald has been named the Hayes-Schembechler B1G Coach of the Year after leading Northwestern to its first division title in 2018.

The announcement was made on Tuesday evening. Fitzgerald was selected as the Coach of the Year by fellow coaches around the B1G. He guided Northwestern to an 8-4 record, including an 8-1 mark in conference play.

Northwestern clinched the B1G West with two weeks remaining in the season, securing its first trip to Indianapolis to play in the B1G Championship Game on Saturday. The Wildcats will take on Ohio State.

Fitzgerald is in his 13th season as the head coach at Northwestern, recording a 95-69 record in his career. The Wildcats will appear in their ninth bowl game this postseason. They’ve also recorded three 10-win seasons under Fitzgerald.

Northwestern’s success extends past this season. The Wildcats have also won 15 of their last 16 B1G games, dating back to October 2017.

This is the first time Fitzgerald has been named the B1G Coach of the Year.
