Pat Fitzgerald on Northwestern backup QB Hunter Johnson: ‘We have one hundred million percent confidence in him’

Quarterback Hunter Johnson transferred to Northwestern to be closer to family but also with the hope of earning the starting job. With T.J. Green suffering an injury in Week 1, the role behind center will fall on him, and Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald has no problem with that.
“We have one hundred million percentage confidence in him,” Fitzgerald said at his press conference Monday.

Coming out of high school, Johnson was a very highly-regarded quarterback, receiving a 5-star rating from multiple scouts. He committed to Clemson in the 2017 recruiting class, but after playing sparingly as a freshman, he elected to transfer. Johnson chose Northwestern instead of Purdue and Ohio State.
Johnson and Green competed behind center this summer, and Green earned the starting role, but he sustained a foot injury in the season opener against Stanford and is out for the season. Johnson struggled in relief, completing 6 of 17 passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns, but he will make his first start Saturday against UNLV.
