For the first time since the tradition was created, Northwestern will have the opportunity to participate in the Iowa Wave on Saturday.

Revered as the greatest tradition in college football, Iowa fans, players, coaches and officials turn away from Kinnick Stadium at the end of the first quarter and wave at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital that overlooks the field. The tradition started in the Hawkeyes’ season opening game in 2017.

Saturday will mark Northwestern’s first trip to Iowa City since the inception of the Wave. Wildcats head coach Pat Fitzgerald couldn’t be more excited.

“One of the coolest, neatest, heartfelt traditions that have now been created in college football,” Fitzgerald said at his Monday press conference. “Obviously, we haven’t participated in it yet. But to have that opportunity, to have our team be a part of that will be something that we will really, truly look forward to having a small piece in a really special tradition.

“What a great move from the Hawkeyes, their fans to lift those young people up and their families. That’s what it’s all about. As tough as it is to not be successful on a Saturday, everything is in perspective.”

Northwestern’s last trip to Kinnick Stadium was in 2016, a game the Wildcats won 38-31. They’re also winners of the last two matchups against Iowa.

Regardless of how the game turns out, Fitzgerald made it clear that he’s excited to be part of something special and something bigger than football.

“It’s something we’ll be honored to be a part of.”
