Northwestern is transitioning into the post-Clayton Thorson era at quarterback, and the team has yet to announce a starter for Week 1.

Thorson leaves big shoes to fill after playing four strong seasons for the Wildcats. He threw for 10,731 yards and 61 TDs during his career, leaving with a number of school records to his name. Now, two players are vying for the chance to replace him.

The two-way battle in fall camp is between former five-star recruit Hunter Johnson and senior TJ Green. The two have a little over 400 yards combined in their collegiate careers.

During the BTN Bus Tour Thursday, the crew broke down what they liked and saw from the quarterback battle. Gerry DiNardo said that Johnson has thrown the ball better than Green, but he acknowledged that Green looks more comfortable in the offense.

Howard Griffith followed and echoed similar sentiments of DiNardo. Griffith believes the Wildcats will play both guys against Stanford to get a better gauge of who will start from there:

“I think it’s really gonna come down to who takes care of the ball better,” explained Griffith. “Whoever has the rhythm. I think they will play both in the first game…I think Hunter can throw it around, but it’s also something to be comfortable in a system.”
