Ohio State missed on a commitment opportunity on Tuesday evening, as 5-star cornerback Tony Grimes announced his pledge to North Carolina. The nation’s seventh-ranked overall prospect had been deciding between four schools.

Grimes narrowed his options down to Ohio State, Georgia, Texas A&M and North Carolina. He had whittled down his options after receiving offers from 41 programs across college football.

Grimes is the latest addition in what has been an outstanding recruiting class for North Carolina. Though he’s the first 5-star prospect to commit to the Tar Heels during the 2021 recruiting cycle, he does become the eighth top 200 prospect in the class to give his pledge to Mack Brown.

According to 247Sports, Grimes is listed as a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback. The Virginia Beach native ranks as the top player at his position and is considered the top overall prospect out of Virginia, as well.

North Carolina now owns the nation’s third-best recruiting class of the 2021 recruiting cycle and is No. 2 in the ACC, behind Clemson. Ohio State still sits atop the recruiting rankings nationally.

The Buckeyes currently have 18 verbal commitments in the 2021 class. They have a total of 15 players with a 4- or 5-star rankings.
