The debate about whether Ohio State or LSU deserves to be ranked in the No. 1 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings rages on. At least between Joel Klatt and Colin Cowherd.

On Wednesday, Klatt made his weekly appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd to talk about the latest edition of the rankings. There was no change in the top seven spots, as LSU stayed at No. 1 and Ohio State at No. 2 this week. Clemson was at No. 3, Georgia at No. 4 and Alabama rounded out the top five.

But does LSU belong in that No. 1 position? Klatt doesn’t believe so.

Yes, the Tigers do have the better resumé right now with wins over Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Texas, but defense has become a concern in Baton Rouge. When you compare LSU’s flaws to Ohio State and Clemson, Klatt believes Ed Orgeron’s bunch should be at the No. 3 spot.

“Putting them at No. 1 just because, I think, is nonsense,” Klatt said of LSU’s ranking. “In particular when you look at the balance and dominance of Ohio State and Clemson. I think Ohio State, by the way, in the next three weeks if they are to win all three games is gonna have even a strong resumé than LSU. They will have win over five currently ranked teams. If they’re the B1G champ and undefeated, that would be a better resumé than even LSU with a win against Alabama. I really still think Ohio State could be the No. 1 team in the Playoff rankings.”

Right now, Ohio State has wins over Wisconsin and Cincinnati, both ranked in the College Football Playoff rankings. If they win out, they’ll add victories over No. 8 Penn State, No. 13 Michigan and either No. 10 Minnesota or No. 12 Wisconsin.

That’s a pretty strong resumé.

Below are Klatt’s full thoughts on the difference between LSU, Ohio State and Clemson, and why he thinks the Buckeyes belong in that No. 1 spot right now.
