Chase Young won’t play in the Washington Commanders’ season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, the team announced on Saturday.

The Commanders originally listed Young as questionable on their injury report on Friday due to a neck injury, but ultimately declared him him out for the Week 1 game against the Cardinals at FedEx Field.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, though, it won’t be a long-term injury, as Young has “been cleared for contact in practice”.

After a strong rookie season after being taken 2nd overall out of Ohio State in the 2020 NFL Draft, Young has been dogged by injury. He totaled 44 tackles and 7.5 sacks in 2020 while forcing 4 fumbles and recovering 3, one for a touchdown. That earned him the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl appearance.

In 2021, though, he was credited with just 1.5 sacks. He played in 9 games before suffering a knee injury in Week 10. In 2022, he missed all but 3 games.

With Washington declining his rookie option for 2024, this is a pivotal season for Young. But it’s already off to a not-so-good start.
