Chip Kelly is officially Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator.

Kelly informed UCLA that he was leaving his post as head coach of the Bruins to join Ryan Day’s staff. OSU formally announced the hire Friday evening.

“We are extremely excited to have Chip and his wife, Jill, joining our program,” Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day said in a released statement. “His experience as a head coach at Oregon, UCLA and in the NFL will bring immediate value to our entire team. I am really looking forward to reconnecting with Chip, introducing him to our staff and team and chasing a championship together.”

Kelly landed in Columbus after the Ohio State offensive coordinator position surprisingly opened up. It turns out Kelly isn’t the only college football head coach who was looking for a coordinator opportunity.

Jeff Hafley resigned as Boston College’s head coach to take a coordinator position with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. Bill O’Brien, a Massachusetts native, had recently taken the Ohio State offensive coordinator position but left to be the new BC head coach.

“I would also like to wish coach Bill O’Brien and his family well as he takes over at Boston College,” Day included in his Friday statement.

Kelly’s last season as a coordinator came in 2008 at Oregon. Since then, he has been the head coach of Oregon (2009-12), the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-15), San Francisco 49ers (2016) and UCLA (2018-13).
