One message continues to stick with Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. When he was officially named the next leader of the prestigious program, he received a text from one of his mentors.

“You’re built for this.”

That’s the text message that UCLA head coach Chip Kelly sent to Day after being named the head coach at Ohio State, Day told CBS Sports in a recent interview. It was a short message that Day won’t forget.

“For someone to say that, and because he’s known me since I’ve been this tall,” Day said, “It meant a lot. You know Chip. He isn’t going to text that if he doesn’t believe it.”

Day has known Kelly for quite some time and worked under him a few times. Day was the quarterbacks coach at New Hampshire when Kelly was the offensive coordinator in 2002. They reunited over a decade later while Kelly was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Day spent the 2015 season as the quarterbacks coach under Kelly that year and followed him to San Francisco in 2016. In 2017, Day joined Urban Meyer’s staff at Ohio State.

To say the two have a strong bond is an understatement. That’s what makes Kelly’s message to Day so special, and one the new Ohio State head coach won’t forget.

Day will enter his first full season as the Buckeyes’ leader this August.
