Chip Kelly talks plan for Jeremiah Smith in national title game vs. Notre Dame
Chip Kelly met with reporters on Saturday ahead of the National Championship Game in Atlanta.
Kelly was asked a number of questions during the session, but superstar freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith was a consistent topic. Smith has been excellent during Ohio State’s CFP run so far, but he was quiet in the Buckeyes’ 14-point win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl earlier this month.

Kelly was asked about Ohio State’s plan for Smith against a stout Notre Dame defense. He said a lot will depend on how the Fighting Irish choose to play defense against Ohio State.
“I think you have to take what the defense gives you whenever you play,” Kelly said. “And if they’re going to try to take Jeremiah away, then we also have other weapons. I think Emeka is a great player. Carnell Tate is a great player. TreVeyon is a great player. Out tight ends really contributed a lot during the Texas game.
“We obviously have plans and thoughts of what we’re going to try to do to get Jeremiah going. But we’ll see how Notre Dame decides to defend us.”
Notre Dame notoriously played a lot of man coverage this season in the secondary, but it’s possible the Fighting Irish will have some additional wrinkles for Smith and Ohio State to deal with.
The betting markets are expecting a big game from Smith. Over at FanDuel, his over/under receiving yardage total is set at 79.5, which is higher than any other player in this game. Smith is also -130 to score a touchdown at any point in the game.
Kickoff on Monday night is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
