Before the 2018 season even started, everyone wondered whether this would be the last season for Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer.
The riff with administration, the three-game suspension, the medical issues and Ohio State’s less-than-impressive play seem to be indicators that Meyer could be planning his exit strategy. Could he really be out of Columbus prior to the start of the 2019 season?
Meyer, himself, says he wants to be the head coach of the Buckeyes for as long as he possibly can. But on Monday, FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd dropped a bombshell. According to his sources, Meyer is retiring from the profession at the end of the year.
“Two separate sources told me this weekend Urban Meyer is done after this year. He’s going to retire from football,” Cowherd said. “There is a fissure between the administration there and, Urban Meyer, he doesn’t always feel they’ve had his back. He’s not gonna admit this. He’s gonna say this is ridiculous.
“You saw him on the sideline this weekend. He does not look good. Some people sayin he’s acting, I don’t think he is. This is a guy that takes every loss personal. I’ve been told by two people that I trust…Urban Meyer…this is it.”

Cowherd certainly isn’t the only person speculating that Meyer will leave Columbus. SEC Network host Paul Finebaum has repeatedly said that he believes Meyer is done after this year. Yahoo! Sports writer Pat Forde said he’d “bet against” the head coach returning to Ohio State next year.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how everything plays out over the next month or so.
Ohio State’s performance has been criticized recently, particularly on the defensive end. Saturday, the Buckeyes surrendered over 500 yards and 51 points to Maryland.
Still, the Buckeyes are 10-1 with a shot to win the B1G in the final weekend of the season.
Could this really be it for Meyer? It sounds more and more like the Ohio State head coach is leaving Columbus at the end of this year.
