Dwayne Haskins became a household name about as quickly as humanly possible, throwing for over 300 yards and five touchdowns in the season opener for Ohio State. After just one week, he worked his way into the Heisman Trophy conversation.
The Buckeyes quarterback has also become one of the most talked about college players from the weekend after his team put up 77 points in a blowout affair. For some, one week is all they needed to see that Haskins is capable of leading OSU to a national title.
One of those people is FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd.
Joining the Dual Threat podcast with Ryen Russillo, Cowherd spoke highly of Haskins and said he believes the Ohio State quarterback is the kind of player who “win a national title or two.”
“[Ohio State’s] quarterback—he’s good. I had an NFL guy this morning text me like ‘Hey, this guy can play,'” Cowherd said. “Urban’s had a lot of these… J.T. Barrett, you kind of love him for a weekend, but then they’re like ‘Yeah, but they’re not going to play at the next level.’ But that kid at Ohio State, that’s the kind of kid that can win a national title at Ohio State. Or two. He’s special.”
Ohio State’s offense certainly didn’t have any trouble moving the football on Saturday and Haskins showed flashes of brilliance throughout the contest.
One week might be a little early to claim Haskins as two-time national championship quarterback, but he’s certainly capable of leading a high-powered offense and dissecting a lot of defenses.
