Seeking their third consecutive conference title, the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes battle the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers in the B1G Championship Game at 8:00 PM ET on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

One piece in a perfect regular season, Ohio State ran past Wisconsin, 38-7, in the two school’s first meeting this year at Ohio Stadium on October 26.

Playing quarterback for John Cooper from 1989-93, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit is very plugged in to the happenings at Ohio State. Making his regular appearance on College GameDay on Saturday, he spoke very highly of the job Day has done.

“I think that what Ryan Day has done is he’s made this team his,” Herbstreit explained. “We talked about when he play against Wisconsin, he needed to be on the sidelines, he needed to win a big game. Same thing against Penn State, same thing against Michigan.

“Urban Meyer’s no longer the face of Ohio State. Ryan Day is because he’s been able to win these big games.”

The winner of the 1991 Heisman Trophy, Desmond Howard starred as a wide receiver and return specialist for the Buckeyes’ archrival, the Michigan Wolverines.

Despite falling on opposite sides of arguably college football’s best rivalry, Howard echoed Herbstreit’s sentiments.

“(Former Miami Hurricanes head coach) Larry Coker and Ryan Day may have something in common; they both followed legends, and those coaches left them a wealth of talent,” he began. “Urban Meyer left the cupboard very full of talent, plus Justin Fields fell in his lap.

“With that being said, I was very impressed with Ryan Day as a play-caller when they played against Penn State a year ago. Now this year, with how he transformed the offense, I think Ryan Day’s one of the premier play-callers in college football.”

Succeeding Butch Davis, Coker served as the Hurricanes’ coach from 2001-06, winning the 2001 BCS National Championship in the process.

Knocking on the door of 85-years-old, former Indiana Hoosiers coach Lee Corso is no stranger to lengthy careers. He shared how Day can be in Columbus for years to come.

“Ryan Day has quietly done a really good job as a head coach,” Corso stated. “He’s learned from somebody on how to be a head coach. Which is, No. 1, coach the coaches, and then let the coaches do their job and motivate the team.

“Those are a few key points, and if you want to have a long career as a head coach, you do those things.”

Saturday’s action will air on FOX with Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt and “The All-American Girl” Jenny Taft on the call.
