Desmond Howard: Ohio State put Ryan Day in 'a bad spot' ahead of 2024 season
Desmond Howard was a star at Michigan, so that automatically means he knows a little something about Ohio State.
Howard was part of arguably the greatest rivalry in college football, and now he’s an ESPN college football analyst so he’s paid to give his opinion about his alma mater’s most-hated rival. On Friday night, during College GameDay leading up to the Indiana-Notre Dame Playoff game, Howard said he believes Ohio State put head coach Ryan Day in a bad position heading into this season.
“I thought during the offseason, when they spent $20 million to go hand pick some players from the portal to bring them to Columbus for the primary reason was to beat Michigan, I thought they put him in a bad (spot),” explained Howard. “Not only that, then they went and got Chip Kelly, who was the head coach at UCLA and became his offensive coordinator.
“In my opinion, that was like the athletic director and the powers that be saying we’re pushing all our chips in the middle of the table, Ryan, this is the year you have to get it done. I thought that was too much pressure on him.”

On the other hand, Howard said that when Day took the head coaching job at Ohio State, he knew the expectations were of the highest order, having been an assistant in Columbus. When Howard started to say that Day has fell short of those lofty expectations, he was met with some pushback from the GameDay crew, specifically host Rece Davis.
Once again, all these years later, the Michigan man found himself in the crosshairs of something involving Ohio State.
