Devin Brown is entering another spring quarterback battle at Ohio State. Whether or not he lands the job remains to be seen but one thing jumps off the page when you hear him speak.

Brown is a true leader the Buckeyes need to lean on in 2024.

With Ohio State hitting the field for spring practices, Brown enters a QB battle that includes former Kansas State starter Will Howard and elite freshmen Air Noland and Julian Sayin. By most expectations, Howard is the likely starter at quarterback to begin the fall, but Brown does not lack confidence.

“I have all the confidence in the world. I’ll never doubt myself, I’ll never have any waivers or anything like that,” Brown claimed. “I’m always going to think I’m the best quarterback in the room, the best quarterback in the country, so I’m going to attack it like that.”

He’s also relishing a leadership role with the team while dispelling rumors that he could eventually transfer:

“Honestly, I think people are cowards. I think people have this thought in their own heads that I’m going to leave and I’m a quitter, but that’s never been me. These people live in their mama’s basement, saying stuff about me and they don’t know shit,” cracked Brown. “Excuse my language, but they don’t know anything. They don’t know who I am, they don’t know who I’ve been.”

Why it matters for Ohio State

For three seasons now, Ohio State has been outclassed and out-toughed by Michigan when it matters the most. Brown alone cannot fix that, but his mentality can do wonders for the Buckeyes. He’s also in a position to finally be a true leader for the program.

A member of the 2022 recruiting class, Brown sat behind CJ Stroud one year before sitting behind Kyle McCord in 2023. Brown’s 2023 was also interrupted by a mid-season injury and then another early injury in the Cotton Bowl.

As a result, Brown’s production so far in Columbus has not been anything to write home about. However, his experiences lend themselves to being a veteran leader for the program.

Brown is now poised as a key leader to help bridge the old Ohio State team of 2023 with the group of new arrivals, including a key group of pieces from the transfer portal. Whether or not that ultimately translates to the starting job will be up for debate, but no mistake about it.

Brown’s leadership will go down as one of the most valuable pieces of the roster throughout spring practices as the program builds for the 2024 season in the fall.
