Devin Brown previews first career start in Cotton Bowl: 'I'm pumped!'
Devin Brown is thrilled to get a chance to show what he can do as Ohio State’s starting quarterback. With the departure of Kyle McCord in the transfer portal, Brown will get that chance in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri.
Asked about the chance on Tuesday, Brown said he’s “pumped” to get his first career start in a top-10 matchup on a big stage. His excitement is evident after serving as the primary backup in 2023.
“I’m pumped. I can’t believe my first start is going to be in the Cotton Bowl. It’s a big stage against a really good team,” said Brown. “It’s a top-10 matchup, and I’m just excited to go out there and show what I can do.”
Asked about QB journey, Brown said he definitely saw McCord grow and go through some tough moments with the Buckeyes. However, Brown feels those moments also helped him grow while watching as the backup.
“Kyle went through a lot and I feel for the guy. There were a lot of tough moments and he grew throughout his career here and built as a leader and built as a player,” Brown said. “Being able to sit behind him and watch him grow really helped me.”
As for his time in Columbus, Brown said he’s only been focused on fighting for the starting job. He claims to be unconcerned about whoever is in the QB room with intentions to fight for the job and show what he can do.
Brown also remained adamant that the training camp QB battle with McCord was “very back and forth.” He was disappointed not to win the starting job but said the coaching staff likes aspects of his game.
“He felt like my leadership and energy were very good. I feel like I kind of bring an energy to the team especially when I’m playing that I feel like I can rally guys around me,” said Brown. “That was definitely a positive, but just staying consistent and not getting out of my game.”
We’ll see how Brown looks in the bowl game, but it could give him a leg up on the QB battle entering 2024.
