Dwayne Haskins received his invitation to New York City, but not many people are expecting the Ohio State quarterback to return to Columbus with any hardware.
Tua Tagovailoa, Kyler Murray and Haskins were the three finalists for the 2018 Heisman Trophy. One of them will hear his name called on Saturday night. And based on the Vegas odds, it will likely go to Tagovailoa or Murray.
Haskins is a heavy underdog to claim college football’s most prestigious individual honor. But that’s something that doesn’t really bother the Ohio State quarterback. In fact, he likes being in that role.
“I kind of like being the underdog,” Haskins said, according to Eleven Warriors. “I feel like I’m the best … but it’s not my choice.”
Haskins threw for 4,580 yards and 47 touchdowns this season, leading the nation in both categories. He had five games with over 400 passing yards and had four touchdowns passes six different times. Nobody in college football had a better stretch than Haskins did at the end of the season. In the Buckeyes’ wins over Maryland, Michigan and Northwestern, he threw for a total of 1,300 yards, 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
In the B1G Championship Game last Saturday, Haskins completed 34-of-41 passes for 499 yards and five touchdowns. All three of those numbers are records for the game.
“Throughout all that adversity, I felt like I did the most I could for my team, and I feel like I should be respected,” Haskins said.
Haskins certainly did do enough to win the Heisman Trophy this fall. And, if this was any other year, he’d be the easy choice. But Tagovailoa and Murray also had spectacular seasons.
Saturday night, Haskins is hoping to hear his name called. But he’s thrilled just to have received his invitation to New York City.
“I’m just excited to be here,” Haskins said.
