Emeka Egbuka never got the credit he deserved at OSU, says Kyle McCord
Emeka Egbuka will go down in history as Ohio State football’s all-time leader in receptions. However, former teammate Kyle McCord believes the wide receiver was even a bit overshadowed during his time with the Buckeyes.
The duo both entered Ohio State together as 5-star prospects in the 2021 recruiting class. Egbuka would eventually breakout as a sophomore during the 2022 season while McCord transferred to Syracuse after his lone season as the starter in 2023.
In a conversation with CBS Sports recently, McCord referenced the unselfishness of Egbuka as one trait that will endear the receiver to NFL teams. Egbuka had his impressive moments across hit time with the Buckeyes but also played with other superstars in Columbus.
“I think just how unselfish he is is the first thing,” said McCord about his former teammate. “At Ohio State, his 4 years there, obviously had a great career there, he’s a great player. But never really was the star receiver, obviously being in the room with Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson and Marvin (Harrison Jr.) and then this past year with Jeremiah Smith.”
McCord also claimed Egbuka never received his proper credit in spite of everything he brought to the table offensively:
“I never felt like he got the credit that he deserved, but just produced every single year. Every time he was on the field, good things happen and I think everybody can see his hands, his route-running, his speed, his athleticism… but I think the stuff that goes unnoticed is his run blocking,” McCord explained. “Played in the slot a bunch, would have no problem going and digging out a linebacker and never complained about it either. Just having a guy like that who’s super talented in every aspect and unselfish to go and do what’s best for the team.”
While it is true Egbuka played with other superstar receivers, it will be interesting to see if fans agree with the sentiment of McCord. Ohio State has had a crowded WR room for years, but the stars have always received their credit, and Egbuka was instrumental in returning the Buckeyes to a national championship status this season.
As for the NFL, Egbuka should be lined up to make an early impact as a polished and complete receiver entering the next level.
