Ohio State did not get the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff, a bit of a surprising decision from the selection committee. Instead, that top spot went to LSU.

That sets up a Fiesta Bowl matchup between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Clemson, a rematch of the 2016 game that went the way of the Tigers. During ESPN’s coverage of the rankings, the analysts talked about the committee’s decision to leapfrog LSU over the Buckeyes, as well as the matchup between OSU and Clemson.

“It appears to me that the committee is looking at LSU right now peaking at the right time,” Jess Palmer said.

LSU thumped Georgia in the SEC Championship Game 37-10. Ohio State struggled with Wisconsin in the B1G Championship through the first two quarters, but pulled away late for a 34-21 victory over the Badgers.

Those two outcomes likely played a major role in the final rankings.

After talking about Ohio State dropping to No. 2, ESPN play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler provided a brief analysis of the Fiesta Bowl matchup between the Buckeyes and the Tigers. Experience, he believes, could be a major factor.

“Clemson’s roster has Playoff experience. Ohio State really doesn’t have that. Maybe a couple of the veterans that are there were there when they lost. I think that matters a lot,” Fowler said.

Both teams are 13-0 and won their conference titles. It should be a fun bout in the Fiesta Bowl.
