That is not how Saturday’s road trip to Purdue was supposed to go.
In what turned out to be an emotionally charged night for Purdue, Ohio State fell flat in a 49-20 loss to the Boilermakers. Dwayne Haskins eclipsed 450 yards passing, but that was the lone bright spot for the Buckeyes. A stale ground game and overwhelmed defense that surrendered 539 yards of offense doomed Urban Meyer’s squad in the loss.
The loss was the first of the season, but it is still hard to take. It also swung Ohio State’s chances to win the B1G in the wrong direction. According to ESPN’s FPI, the loss dropped the Buckeyes’ chances to win the conference to 25.9%. That is after having a 51.3% chance to win the conference following Week 7.
What makes that number even worse is Ohio State’s loss was Michigan’s gain. After taking down the Spartans, the Wolverines now have a 47% chance to win the B1G, according to the FPI. The Buckeyes are still given a 52.9% chance to beat Michigan in the last game of the season, but they will need to rebound quickly moving forward.
