ESPN’s Heather Dinich knows things for the College Football Playoff can go one of two ways. A lot of that will be determined on Championship Weekend.

During Sunday morning’s broadcast of SportsCenter, Dinich explained the “simple” route to the CFP:

“This could be very simple for the committee or it could be very controversial,” said Dinich. “If Georgia, Michigan, TCU and USC all win their conference championship games, there’s your top 4, fair and simple, right?”

However, Dinich went on to say that Tuesday’s next version of the CFP Rankings could be the “most important regular-season ranking” in the history of the Playoff. Dinich explains that is because it will show how the committee feels about Ohio State and Alabama should one of the top four lose in Championship Weekend:

“But on Tuesday night, this could be the most important regular-season ranking in CFP history because how far does Ohio State far after falling? A loss in the Big 12 and Pac-12 Championship Games opens the door for Ohio State and even 2-loss Alabama to get back into this conversation,” said Dinich. “So, is Ohio State at No. 5? Or are they below 2-loss Alabama? Like you said, they don’t play again so who does the committee think is better?”
