Expert says number of marquee games on Ohio State's schedule gives Justin Fields edge in Heisman race
When talking about the upcoming Heisman Trophy race, the conversation has included two primary candidates: Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Both are outstanding players and give their respective teams an excellent shot to win the national championship.
But which gunslinger has the best shot to win the Heisman Trophy in 2020? College football expert Phil Steele believes it’s Fields.
Steele admits that he has Lawrence being selected No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. He even has the Clemson quarterback penciled in as the First-Team All-American this year, nudging out Fields.
So why would Fields win the Heisman? Steele says it boils down to scheduling.
“I have him winning the Heisman,” Steele told 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello in the site’s Social Distance series. “I know that Trevor Lawrence is gonna be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, so I’ve got him first-team, All-American, but I’ve got Fields winning the Heisman. I think the reason he wins the Heisman is that he’s got more marquee games. Now, Oregon’s gone, off the schedule in non-conference play. But I think going into Penn State, if they can go in that whiteout condition and come out with a win, he’ll also have wins against Michigan, Iowa on the schedule. And with those big wins like that, I think that gives him a better shot.”
Fields was a finalist last season after throwing for 3,273 yards and 41 touchdowns while adding 484 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He led the Buckeyes to a 13-1 season, a B1G title and a College Football Playoff appearance.
That’s not the only major prediction Steele has for Ohio State in 2020. The Buckeyes are also his selection to claim the 2020 national championship.
