James Laurinaitis had a star-studded career at Ohio State before spending 8 seasons as a linebacker in the NFL. He has since been a part of the broadcast team at the Big Ten Network but recent reports indicate he is expected to leave the booth for coaching.

According to a report by BuckeyeScoop.com, Laurinaitis is expected to head to Notre Dame to join the staff of new head coach Marcus Freeman. It would be Laurinaitis’ first stint as a coach regardless of level or title.

Matt Freeman with Irish Sports Daily is also reporting that Laurinaitis will join Notre Dame’s coaching staff. According to Freeman, Laruinaitis’ role is expected to be on the support staff as either an analyst or possibly as a graduated assistant.

Nothing has been announced, but if Laurinaitis does join the Fighting Irish, it would set up an interesting debut in 2022. Ohio State and Notre Dame are set to face each other on Sept. 3 in Columbus next season. Stay tuned to see if the former linebacker does indeed head to the college ranks as a coach.

Laurinaitis had 375 total tackles in his Ohio State career, including 3-straight 100-tackle seasons. He also had 24.5 TFL, 13 sacks, and 9 interceptions as a 3-time All-American and All-B1G performer.
