Former Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown is officially moving to his next destination now that Ohio State’s title run is complete.

Following the end of the regular season, Brown confirmed his intentions to enter the transfer portal. However, he included his intentions to finish out the postseason with the Buckeyes, whatever that may hold.

Brown served as the primary backup for the Buckeyes for the past 2 seasons, save for a few games due to injury in 2023. He was called upon once during Ohio State’s Playoff run, but that was simply to mop up a blowout win over Tennessee.

Now, he’s heading to Cal as the Bears prepare for their 2nd season in the ACC under head coach Justin Wilcox. The move will pair Brown with OC and former Boise State and Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin.

Coming out of high school, Brown was a 4-star recruit, top-50 prospect nationally and the No. 6 QB in the 2022 recruiting class per the 247 Sports Composite. Even after losing QB battles to Kyle McCord and Will Howard, Brown reiterated his desire to remain with the program.

At some point, things shifted, likely due to Ohio State’s acquisition of Julian Sayin via the transfer portal from Alabama. While Ryan Day made it clear Brown was the primary backup throughout the season, Sayin appeared in 4 games as a true freshman this season, and the coaching staff has consistently spoken positively about the QB.

Along with Sayin, the Buckeyes signed 5-star QB and in-state prospect Tavien St. Clair in the 2025 recruiting class. The No. 3 player in the country, all indications point to St. Clair and Sayin as Ohio State’s likely options to succeed Will Howard under center.

The move to the West Coast also brings Brown a bit closer to his home state of Utah where he played high school football. We’ll see how Brown’s future shapes up in 2025, but he at least leaves Columbus with a national championship ring in hand.
