When Garrett Wilson made some highlight-reel catches in Ohio State’s spring game, it was almost assumed the five-star freshman would be a starter at receiver this fall. He certainly possesses the talent to do that.

But the Buckeyes have some pretty skilled guys at the position, too. While Wilson has just as good of a shot at landing in the starting rotation as any, head coach Ryan Day recently said the freshman standout may be looking at more of a backup role right now, at least to open the season.

That doesn’t mean Wilson can’t make a big impact immediately. In fact, his teammates are expecting it.

“He’s going to play a big part in this year’s success,” Justin Fields told Big Ten Network on Tuesday. “He’s really been a big part of this offense. He’s gained respect from the whole team in just the way he’s been on the field, off the field. He works hard, so I’m very excited about him.”

K.J. Hill, who will likely be the go-to receiver for the Buckeyes this year, echoed similar praise.

“He shows flashes every day,” Hill said. “He’s definitely going to help us a lot this year, I feel like. I just feel like he has to have a great training camp and be consistent.”

Wilson arrived in Columbus in the spring, so he’s been able to adjust his game to college-level speed. Clearly, that’s paid off for the true freshman.

It sounds like it may pay off for the Buckeyes when the season arrives in a few short weeks, too.
