The season opening starter at quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs, redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis, has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The report was confirmed Monday by Georgia head coach Kirby Smart.

“As far as D’Wan goes, he’s handled everything first class, he didn’t want to be a distraction for the team,” Smart said during his Monday Zoom press conference.

“He was hurt and disappointed things came out before the game.”

Mathis overcame a well-documented emergency brain surgery in May of 2019.

Smart also said that the Bulldogs would like Mathis to stay with the program. The former Oak Park (Mich.) High School star had completed 8 of 17 passes for 55 yards with one interception in a 37-10 win at Arkansas on Sept. 26. He was benched in favor of former walk-on Stetson Bennett, who started the next five games.

Mathis has appeared in four games this season completing 12 of 30 passes for 89 yards with a touchdown and 3 interceptions.

Prior to coming to Georgia, Mathis had previously committed to Ohio State but opted to play for the Bulldogs in a last minute decision. The move is the opposite of current Buckeyes quarterback, and Heisman Trophy candidate Justin Fields, who was at Georgia for a season before making the move to Columbus.
