Perhaps Dwayne Haskins’ getting snubbed by the New York Giants was a blessing in disguise. It was hard to see it at the time, but after recent comments made by general manager Dave Gettleman, Haskins may be grateful for that decision.

The Giants had the most surprising move of the draft on Thursday night, choosing Duke quarterback Daniel Jones over Haskins with the No. 6 overall pick. It was a decision that Haskins said will motivate him even more heading into his professional career.

But after hearing Gettleman explain why he opted against drafting Haskins, you can’t help but think perhaps the Giants did a favor for the former Ohio State quarterback.

“I had gone to see Dwayne at Ohio State. I had seen Kyler [Murray] and Will [Grier] play each other…I had seen Dwayne play in the Big 12 — is that the Big 12 anymore?” Gettleman said according to Pro Football Focus’ Scott Barrett. “So, I had seen those three guys play. And to me it’s really important that you see quarterbacks play live…I decided to stay for the [Senior Bowl] and [Daniel Jones] walked out there and I saw a professional quarterback, after three series that I watched. I saw a professional quarterback, so that’s when I was in full bloom love.”

So, two things here: first of all, Gettleman has no idea what conference Ohio State plays in. And second, he fell in love with Jones after three series…at the Senior Bowl? That’s quite a reach.

Sure, seeing a quarterback live and watching how they handle the pressure, crowd noise, environment, etc. is important. But the Senior Bowl doesn’t exactly provide the best sampling of that.

Maybe Gettleman knows something that nobody else knows. That’s why he’s the general manager, right?

From afar, though, his judgment seems to be suspect and his reasoning isn’t all that logical. Haskins may have actually dodged a bullet by dropping to No. 15 on Thursday night.
