Top-ranked Ohio State barely escaped Rutgers with a 35-16 victory on Saturday, and the verdict on how that impacts the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff poll will come out soon.

College football analyst Greg McElroy voiced his concerns about how the Buckeyes looked. Five other Power 5 conference teams besides the Buckeyes sit at 9-0 while Group of 5 powers James Madison and Liberty sit far outside looking in despite 9-0 records, too.

“Look, I want to value resumes, too. I think they’re really important, but we can’t continue to put lipstick on a pig when a team’s not playing well,” McElroy said about Ohio State on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning show on Tuesday.

McElroy broke down how close Ohio State really came to an upset and that the Buckeyes’ competition doesn’t look as good as it once did. Georgia, Florida State, Michigan, and Washington have mostly blown out the teams they should win comfortably against.

“A team that should have been down 16-7 heading into halftime, but Rutgers quarterback couldn’t complete a forward pass. A team that needed a pick-6 in the red zone for 97 yards to take the lead in the second half and then put a couple of garbage time touchdowns to make it look a whole heck of a lot better,” McElroy said about Ohio State.

“I know that their resume would reflect excellence. I get that but Notre Dame just lost. That’s another big hit. Penn State looks pretty good, sure, but until they lose this week to Michigan,” McElroy added regarding the Buckeyes’ opponents.
