Greg McElroy has been in the process of dissecting the 2023 NFL Draft class and providing his favorite players at every position during his latest episode of the Always College Football podcast.

Along the way, Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud came up as one of McElroy’s top players at the position this year. McElroy was also asked about the narrative of QBs out of Ohio State struggling in the NFL and whether or not that narrative holds weight in the evaluation process for Stroud and future players from the Buckeyes.

“I think it’s low-hanging fruit,” said McElroy about the negative narrative surrounding Ohio State QBs in the NFL. “Part of the reason why I feel that way is because I think success in the NFL is far more about the situation that you step into and the individual player itself.”

McElroy went on to say that the results of Buckeye QBs in the NFL are not an indication of Ohio State’s ability to prepare guys for the next level. Instead, it’s a reflection of each individual player and certain guys winding up in “trash situations” to begin their NFL careers.

“For instance, everyone wants to talk about Ohio State’s guys… I don’t think that has anything to do with Ohio State. It’s not about Ohio State being able to prepare you to take the next step,” McElroy explained. “It’s about the individual player.”

“There have been a million guys that have stepped into horrible situations that could play at a really high level that ultimately did not play very well because they were in trash situations. So I don’t think it’s fair to judge a team by their busts.”

The narrative surrounding Ohio State QBs in the NFL has resurfaced with chatter of CJ Stroud’s stock potentially sliding ahead of the draft. The first round gets started Thursday night, so it will not be long before fans find out where Stroud lands to begin his career.
