Jeremiah Smith eclipses 1,000 yards in historic freshman campaign for Ohio State
Jeremiah Smith showed up like few have in their first season at Ohio State.
He broke freshman records galore, and he served notice to the Big Ten that he was just getting started. Smith finished an incredible regular season with 934 receiving yards on 57 catches and he had a knack for finding the end zone with 10 touchdowns.
But what about Playoff jitters? No way.
The phenom from South Florida came out on fire just like the rest of the Ohio State offense in Saturday night’s first-half demolition of Tennessee at the Horseshoe. Just over 2 minutes into the game, Smith caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Will Howard to give the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead and ignite a 21-point first quarter that ended with Ohio State up 21-0.
Smith had 5 catches for 81 yards and that touchdown in the first half, which put him over 1,000 yards for the season. Keep in mind there was still another half to play in Columbus, and from the looks of the scoreboard at halftime it seems that Smith might have at least another game left on New Year’s Day against Oregon.
The Volunteers pulled within 21-10 with a touchdown late in the first half, but the Buckeyes were still in control, led by their record-breaking freshman wideout. Smith is already well on his path to become one of the all-time greats in Ohio State history.
