Jeremiah Smith is the crowning jewel of the 2024 recruiting class, headlining the cycle as the nation’s No. 1 prospect. The 5-star wide receiver is a longtime Ohio State commit and confirmed plans to sign with the Buckeyes on Wednesday.

However, that decision is still in limbo as Early Signing Day approaches the waning hours. Ohio State has yet to confirm Smith’s National Letter of Intent as of 5:15 pm ET, and the drama might not be over for the Buckeyes.

Andrew Ivins with 247 Sports commented on the matter and reported someone close to Smith’s camp indicated the receiver was telling Miami he wanted to be a Hurricane:

“This feels like Peyton Bowen, was that last year on this set? I just got a phone call from someone familiar with Jeremiah Smith’s camp. No LOI announced yet by Ohio State. Someone was telling me last night that Jeremiah Smith was telling the Miami staff that’s where he wanted to be,” said Ivins. “There’s reason to believe he wants to be a Hurricane.”

Ivins did point out the Early Signing Period runs through Friday so it’s possible Smith’s signature comes through between now and then. He also pointed to some luxuries Smith has about deciding on his final destination as the No. 1 player in the class but admitted it’s “notable” that Ohio State has not confirmed a signing.

“Now, we’ll see how this plays out but I think it’s notable we’re approaching the 5 o’clock hour and we still haven’t seen that paperwork,” Ivins said. “And remember the signing period goes through Friday, and I go back in my mind to a month ago… His coach told me he didn’t think at the time Smith was going to sign anywhere. He could just show up and enroll at the school of his choice. Not everyone has that luxury but when you’re the No. 1 player in the country you can.”

Smith originally confirmed his plans to sign during a live announcement that coincided with Ryan Day’s press conference. The head coach was visibly relieved, but it’s possible Day has a few more bullets to sweat before officially landing the landmark recruit.
