Jim Knowles situation reportedly 'complicated' amidst departure rumors
Jim Knowles has been the defensive coordinator at Ohio State since 2022.
Since Knowles arrived in Columbus, the Buckeyes have not finished a season lower than No. 14 in total defense. In 2024, Knowles’ elite unit finished No. 1 in total defense and helped the team win its first title game since 2014.
Before the title game, rumors began circulating that Knowles could be interested in Oklahoma’s vacant DC job. He’s also been linked to Penn State’s vacant defensive coordinator position.
Now, Football Scoop is reporting that a “fascinating situation” is playing out with Knowles and the Buckeyes.

The situation is described as “complicated,” so it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Perhaps Knowles feels like he’s accomplished everything he wanted at Ohio State after winning the title this season.
Before coming to Columbus, Knowles held the same position at Oklahoma State from 2018-21. Knowles became a hot commodity after his Oklahoma State defense finished top 1o nationally in opponent points per game, opponent yards per game, and opponent rushing yards per game, among others.
The coach ultimately decided on Ohio State, which had an opening after former DC Kerry Coombs was not retained.
Losing Knowles would be a big blow for the Buckeyes. However, the team just won a title game and possesses as many resources as any team, so landing a quality replacement likely wouldn’t be difficult for head coach Ryan Day.
