Joel Klatt saw it coming as soon as Bill O’Brien left Ohio State for Boston College. Chip Kelly was headed to Ohio State to run the Buckeyes’ offense.

“There is not a person in this business that Ryan Day trusts more than Chip Kelly,” Klatt said. “… It made a lot of sense, it makes so much sense.”

Klatt then broke down Kelly’s success at UCLA, and said that Kelly rebuilt the Bruins’ program. Kelly tore it down even further to rebuild it in his view of the right way, Klatt said. Kelly also won 8 games in the last 3 years, which isn’t easy to do, Klatt said.

Because Kelly didn’t like the direction of college football, particularly for head coaches, Klatt believes it makes all the sense in the world to make a move to Columbus.

Klatt added that Kelly will have his old offensive line coach from UCLA with him at Ohio State in Justin Frye, along with a mobile quarterback and the best backfield in the country.

“Ohio State will be become a better running team,” Klatt said. “Chip Kelly rushes the ball as well as anybody in the country. That’s what UCLA did, and I think Ohio State is going to lean into that a little bit more.”

It’s how Michigan beat Ohio State in recent seasons, Klatt said. Last year Ohio State was 88th in the country running the ball, Klatt said, and it needs to improve, and that’s the point of the hire.
