New Ohio State QB Justin Fields met with the media following the Buckeyes second spring practice Friday.

Fields, the Georgia transfer, is competing against fellow QB Matthew Baldwin for the starting job. Fields was asked about the ongoing QB competition Friday afternoon.

“I mean, I didn’t really know what to expect,” Fields said about the competition. “Of course, I want to be the starter, but at the end of the day, that’s not my decision. So, I’m just going to come out here and continue to get better.”

Fields was then asked before getting on campus did he think he’d show up and be the starter.

“No, Coach Day wasn’t giving any handouts; so, I knew coming here, I’d have to work for it.”

The dual-threat signal caller is the perfect fit for Ohio State’s system, and he could bring another dimension to the offense in the running game, too.

Although he’s battling Baldwin for the starting job, the two have become good friends.

“Me and Matt are good friends. He’s definitely a good QB, and I’m just learning from him everyday, because he was here last year. He’s been helping me out with the plays and stuff like that.”
