During the offseason, Ryan Day constantly told us not to expect to see Dwayne Haskins-like numbers from Justin Fields. He said those kind of stats shouldn’t be anticipated from a first-time starter, or really any college quarterback.

Fields is making his head coach look a little silly for making those comments, though, at least through four games.

After Ohio State posted an impressive 76-5 win over Miami (OH) Saturday to close out the non-conference schedule, Big Ten Network fired up a graphic that revealed the trajectory Fields is on through four games. The sophomore quarterback is on pace to finish the year with a total of 57 touchdowns.

That’s more than Haskins and J.T. Barrett totaled during their best years at Ohio State.

Fields accounted for six more touchdowns in Saturday’s win, four passing and two rushing. He’s totaled 19 on the year and hasn’t thrown a single interception through four games.

Obviously, the Buckeyes haven’t face the best competition through the first four weeks of the season. But Fields’ impressive start shouldn’t be overlooked simply because of the level of opponent. He’s made even the defenses of Cincinnati and Indiana look silly this year.

Fields will have the chance to prove he can do it against the big boys moving forward. With non-conference play over, the competition is about to get a lot better for the Buckeyes.

We’ll see if these figures hold up.
