It’s been the storyline since the end of the 2018 college football season: is Kyler Murray or Dwayne Haskins the better NFL quarterback?

Everyone has given their opinion on the matter and, in just a few hours, we’ll find out which quarterback is taken first. But before Thursday night’s NFL Draft, College GameDay analyst and college football expert Kirk Herbstreit was asked to weigh in on the Murray-Haskins conversation.

For Herbstreit, it’s Murray who should be taken off the board first.

“If you’re Kliff (Kingsbury), I don’t know how you pass on what he brings to the table,” Herbstreit during Get Up!. “Lincoln Riley and Kliff Kinsgbury run a very similar system, which would be turn key and important during his transition. But when you talk to Lincoln about him, he says the similarities are eerie (with Mayfield) as far as ability to process and make plays — all the intangibles it takes.

“I think sometimes people see the athletic ability and get misguided sometimes by thinking he’s undersized. This kid makes every throw you ever want him to make. He just happens to be the best athlete on the field doing it. It’s different because of that X-factor and what Baker did last year, plus Baker had those three years of starting experience, so you kind of knew a little bit more what you were getting with Baker because of how long he played. But to me, coming out of this system, I think it’s a no-brainer.”

Murray does seem to be a good fit for Kingsbury, who will be in his first year with the Cardinals. And Haskins really hasn’t been in the conversation as a potential candidate to get selected by Arizona.

Herbstreit is still high on Haskins and believes the former Buckeye will be the second quarterback taken off the board.

“I think Dwayne Haskins proved in his one year as a starter what he could do. He works through his progressions and is more of a traditional quarterback as we know. What I like about him is that he has a way of leading his team and getting his team to believe his team can win. I want a guy that can get others to buy in and that’s who Dwayne Haskins is.”

The New York Giants and most recently the Oakland Raiders have been mentioned as potential landing spots for Haskins. That would put the former Ohio State quarterback at going No. 4 or No. 6, should one of those franchises choose a gunslinger.

Whether or not Murray is the best quarterback in the draft is still unanswered, but most believe his style of play would be a good fit in Arizona. We’ll find out Thursday night if the Cardinals think so, as well.
