Ohio State has talent, that has never changed. But heading into the 2019 season, there are some question marks surrounding the program that it hasn’t faced before.
Urban Meyer is gone, and Ryan Day is a first-year head coach. Dwayne Haskins left for the NFL, and Justin Fields has limited experience. The defense is still unproven after an abysmal season in 2018.
Those questions have left a chip on the Buckeyes’ shoulder heading into the season, according to ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit.
“I kind of sense a chip on the shoulder collectively of Ohio State with all the questions,” Herbstreit said during College GameDay. “What are they gonna do without [Dwayne] Haskins? What are they going to do without Urban Meyer? I think they’re sitting their anxiously waiting for the season to get started.”

Ohio State has typically been the favorite to win the B1G and challenge for a spot in the College Football Playoff in the Meyer era. But with Day taking over, there’s a belief that Michigan is in now-or-never mode, and finally has the talent to have that breakthrough year.
Perhaps the Buckeyes use that as fuel in 2019.
