Urban Meyer will announce on Tuesday afternoon that he’ll be retiring as Ohio State’s head football coach after seven seasons in Columbus.
The decision to leave the program has prompted plenty of speculation and discussion just over the last few hours. Will Meyer coach again? Will he take on another role within Ohio State’s athletic department? Or is there a final destination that Meyer has in mind for one final gig?
People are going to speculate for the coming hours, days, weeks and even months about Meyer’s future. But ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit doesn’t believe we’ll ever see him on the sidelines again.
“I think, number one, I don’t see him coaching again,” Herbstreit said on Get Up!. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays within the Ohio State community, stay within the athletic department in some capacity.
“He is an Ohio State guy. This is different than Florida. The outside world thinks he’s a Notre Dame guy, he is an Ohio State guy to his core.”

Meyer, of course, stepped away from his position at Florida prior to the 2011 season due to health concerns. Herbstreit believes this is a different situation because of Meyer’s connection with Ohio State.
In seven seasons in Columbus, Meyer posted an 85-9 record with three B1G titles and a national championship. He’s still considered one of the top five coaches in all of college football.
Meyer will officially announce his retirement at 2 p.m. ET.
