Kirk Herbstreit is picking Ohio State to win during the top-10 showdown in South Bend. That’s not surprising for the former Buckeye turned broadcaster, but how Herbstreit delivered that pick was emphatic.

After hearing Desmond Howard pick Notre Dame while hammering on the Irish offensive line and quarterback Sam Hartman, Herbstreit referenced Lou Holtz’s Friday comments about Ohio State becoming soft under Ryan Day.

“Any time you’re coming into this game, you’re right. The line of scrimmage is big. I also think the approach and the attitude (is) big,” said Herbstreit. “Lou Holtz made an interesting comment on Pat McAfee’s show yesterday, he was talking about physicality, how Ohio State when they go up against teams that are tough, they lose with Ryan Day. He said ‘I coached with Woody Hayes, but with Ryan Day, these teams have become soft. So when they play tough teams, they lose.’ That’s why he picked Notre Dame.”

Herbstreit fired back at that idea, cautioning against analysts setting up the Buckeyes as some sort of underdog in this game. He also said you can bet Day’s squad will bring their “MFing” lunch pail all game long.

“He also said ‘Bring your lunchpail’ kind of game for Notre Dame. All I can say is, because you’re doubting on Ohio State, you’re putting them in such an underdog mentality,” Herbstreit explained. “They’re bringing that MFing lunch pail all day long. Trust me. Ohio State!”
