Kirk Herbstreit says Jeremiah Smith could be best WR ever at Ohio State
Kirk Herbstreit turned some heads with his latest praise of Ohio State freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
On Saturday’s College GameDay, Herbstreit could not resist saying Smith could be the top wideout to ever play at Ohio State.
“I mean, I don’t want to get — I don’t want to exaggerate here and say, ‘He’s going to be the best ever,’ but he could be the best that they’ve ever had there,” Herbstreit said.
“This dude is a grown man, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, and Ryan Day and Chip Kelly said he came in just so polished with his route running, his knowledge of the offense, the way he plays, the way he works, his humility, which is very rare for a high-profile wide receiver. But this guy, I think we’ll find out the coming weeks, Oregon, Iowa, that’s when you’re really going to learn how good he is.”
Smith, a 5-star recruit, is already averaging over 100 yards per game. Against Akron and Western Michigan, Smith has posted 11 catches for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns.
There have been numerous elite pass-catchers in Ohio State history. In recent years, Chris Olave, Marvin Harrison Jr., Garrett Wilson, Parris Campbell and Jaxon Smith-Njigba have sported scarlet and gray. If Smith produces at a similar level, Buckeye fans will be thrilled. If he exceeds their production, Smith could leave Columbus with an epic hardware haul.
Smith and the Buckeyes are off in Week 3. Ohio State returns to action on Sept. 21 when Marshall comes to Columbus.
