LeBron James is a big supporter of all things Ohio State as an Ohio native. He’s even wondered if he could return to college as a football player since he’s never been a professional in that sport.

While that purely hypothetical is never in the realm of possibility, Ryan Day was recently asked about that scenario. It came during an appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon as Ohio State’s head coach makes a victory lap following the national championship.

Day’s warning to the NBA superstar? Don’t make the pitch if you’re not ready to be treated like a freshman:

“First off, LeBron is a huge fan of Ohio State, he’s been a great supporter,” said Day. “But that being said, he’d be right in line with the freshmen at the back of the room, he’d have to work his way up. He doesn’t get any special treatment.”

It’s safe to say Day isn’t in the business of handing out helmets without a black stripe to even the brightest stars. But that’s nothing new in Columbus.

Every player to filter through Ohio State in recent years has had to go through the process of shedding their black stripe, a sign of becoming a full-fledged Buckeye. Freshman players and even veteran transfers — such as Will Howard, Trey Sermon and Caleb Downs — have all gone through the process, as did 5-star freshman Jeremiah Smith.

And Ryan Day let it be known: LeBron James would have a black stripe, too, if he ever did become a Buckeye.
