Marcus Freeman was looking for any advantage he could get ahead of Monday night’s national title game.

When ESPN’s Chris Fowler sat down to interview the Notre Dame head coach and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, he asked Freeman what he would ask Day if he could slip in one question for his counterpart.

Freeman didn’t hesitate:

“How many different ways do you plan to get the ball to No. 4?” Freeman said, referring to star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

Some would look at that response by Freeman as him trolling Day after No. 4, who is Ohio State freshman phenom Jeremiah Smith, was held to 1 catch for 3 yards in the semifinal victory over Texas. But then when you look at Smith’s ridiculous stats from this season, it might just be that Freeman knows Smith is due to explode on Monday night and that he would like to know how many targets Smith will get.

Smith rewrote the school and Big Ten record book this season. He goes into Monday night’s showdown with 71 catches for 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns. If Freeman has his way, Smith won’t be adding too much more to those totals in the final game of the season.
