Mother of Ohio State WR Carnell Tate killed in Chicago shooting, per report
The Ohio State football family was reportedly rocked by a tragedy over the weekend with the start of the 2023 season under 2 months away.
According to a report from Eli Ong with WGN9 in Chicago, the mother of freshman wide receiver Carnell Tate was slain in a drive-by shooting per the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The alleged drive-by shooting occurred around 2 am Sunday in the Garfield Park neighborhood. The 41-year-old woman shot and killed in the 4000 block of West Washington Boulevard was later identified as Ashley Griggs. Community activist Andrew Holmes identified Griggs as the mother of Carnell Tate.
Tate originally attended Marist High School outside of Chicago per 247 Sports. He transferred to IMG Academy in Florida for his final 2 seasons.
As a prospect, Tate was rated as a 4-star recruit and the 59th overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. He was a January enrollee for the Buckeyes and went through spring practices with Ryan Day’s program.
