Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye is leaving Columbus to take the same position on Jonathan Gannon’s staff with the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news on Saturday morning. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman corroborated that report.

Frye spent 3 seasons with the Buckeyes after joining the staff from UCLA in 2022. Frye also held the title of run game coordinator at Ohio State.

In Arizona, Frye will reunite with former Ohio State left tackle Paris Johnson Jr., who was an All-American playing for Frye in 2022 and a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Johnson was 1 of 3 All-Americans Frye coached along the offensive line during his 3 years with the program. Center Seth McLaughlin and guard Donovan Jackson were All-American picks this past season.

While his recruiting left plenty to be desired within Ohio State circles, his developmental chops were above reproach. During the 2024 season, Frye navigated season-ending injuries to McLaughlin and left tackle Josh Simmons, managed more than a dozen different offensive line combinations, and still helped the Buckeyes to a national championship.

Frye becomes the second assistant from the Buckeyes’ title staff to leave this offseason, though his departure doesn’t quite have the same sting as that of former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who left for Penn State.
